History of the Elevator
Elevator In the 19th century, freight elevators were used in mines or factories to transport minerals such as necessary supplies and fuel. However, the first elevator system that did not pose a threat to life safety was produced in the mid-19th century. Until this time, buildings and floors were built with 5 or 6 floors so that people could climb up with stairs. These mid-19th century elevators were powered by steam power. This power obtained with steam rotated a drum and the ropes holding the elevator cabin were wound on this drum, which was rotated like a fishing rod with a pulley system. This elevator, which does not pose a threat to human health, was invented by ‘Elisha Graves Otis’ in the mid-19th century.
What is Electric Indoor Elevator?
With the steam power of the elevators used in the past, the elevator rope was wrapped around the drum system by using an electric motor instead of the steam engine used to produce steam. These elevators were later changed to pull type. In these elevators, a car is placed at one end of the rope and a weight balancing the car is placed at the other end. Each of the elevator ropes is placed in separate grooves on a pulley or sheave located above the elevator shaft. The ropes are moved by rotating this pulley or sheave by means of an electric motor, and the weight balancing the cabin is moved in the opposite direction while the cabin at the end of the rope goes up.
